There is nothing clever nor redeeming in this story of 2 reprobates who strew their neurosis across this B-list wine country landscape. "Sideways" is the quintessential example of how not to make a movie. Spend your 8 bucks on a bottle of Merlot instead.

This is a movie that is about nothing, yet is about "everything". I think it's one of the best movies of the last 10 years.

Brilliant! Absolute genius! This film about life, love, loss, and friendship. It's also about flawed characters who struggle along trying to endure and perhaps even enjoy life...and it's hilarious, honest, poignant and spot-on emotionally real. Forget the exploding spaceships of the usual Hollywood dreck, this is a real film about real people, and something you can enjoy like a fine wine. It was damn good.

About the Merlots.....they are prozaic. It's easy to like a Merlot. Kind of like routing for the Yankees. There is a serious art to taking a very hard, acidic, tempromental grape and making it into a very tasty wine that haunts your pallet for days on in until you satisfy again with it's untique taste. That's what a good Pinot or Syrah does. They are not "cookie cutter" type of varitals like Merlot. Merlot is perdictable....even if it's good to the pallet, it's still perdicatble. Save perdicability for Heaven..... Great movie......very deep!

Yes, indeed, a bottle of Lambrini gets you very paralytic. It is easy to get legless on Merlot and it sets you up nicely for a bit of violence later in the evening. There is a serious risk however of getting a very hard scrape that will haunt your pellet for days. I find that a bottle of Babyshami goes down a treat on a Friday night - the perfect accompaniment to a fish supper. Wor lass has the kind of face that launched a thousand sips. And there can be no more romantic beverage, than a fine can of the old purple tin which always hits the spot...buuuurrrrrrrrrrp!

Loved it. Great movie. Simple, straightforward and about the choices we make in life and the stance we take. Are we more Miles than we would like to be? or a bit too much Jack than we should be? Life inevitably involves many dilemmas and often the choices we make are less romantic than we would like them to be. If one can not distinguish the human stupidities which this entails (which the movie with good humour depicts) from this grander (human) theme within the movie, then no matter how many fancy words a comment may include, you just didnt get it.

I don't understand how anyone could give this movie 1 out of 10. Clearly you're projecting your own limitations on other people's art. You should focus that anger in a creative way instead of bashing someone else's expression.

The film, not unlike the wine it is equally about, is bittersweet. I admit when first reading the script and seeing the movie, I felt like someone had cheated me out of my money. However, upon reflecting, I found the movie to be something that not only takes time to understand, but an acquired taste to enjoy, let alone fathom. With its intricate characters and well- plotted story, Sideways has easily become one of my favorite films.

I enjoyed the movie with the exception of one thing- he says he doesn't expect much from a cab franc, yet a cheval blanc is mostly made of cab franc. Good movie.

So funny, but so sad. All at the same time. Much like real life. I don't think pretentious is a word that could be associated this film. Watch it again you'll see more everytime.

About the merlot. To get that much hatred, a thing or a person, has to be hyped. So hyped that people would want to tear it down. In the 1980s, approachable, fruit-forward, simple, entry-level merlots were extremely popular. It wasn't unlike those one-hit wonders that get overplayed on the radio. There is something catchy or fun about the song, so it catches on. Sick of hearing about it, music snobs would go out of their way to bash it as much as they can. There was a reason these merlots were popular: they were delicious--still are. But they lacked complexity--which is something snobs look for and appreciate. Which is why a frustrated and depressed wine snob like miles bashes the merlot. I, personally, like merlots. And I won't let others tell me what to drink.
